Chairperson, Nigeria Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has raised the alarm that human trafficking has reached an epidemic level in the country.
Briefing newsmen after meeting President Muhammadu Buhari on the state of human trafficking in the country yesterday, Daniri-Erewa recommended a multi-agency approach to the challenge.
Speaking against the backdrop of the latest rescue of a 23-year-old Nigerian teacher, Omolola Ajayi, who was recently trafficked to Lebanon, she stated that “ such multi agency approach will help to track down the traffickers”
“ As long as these traffickers are allowed to work free, there is very little that can be achieved,” she said.
The NIDCOM boss also mulled a well-structured jobs policy to regulate Nigerians migrating for jobs outside the country
“ We can also adopt a well-structured approach for Nigerians seeking jobs outside the country, like it is done by the Philippines currently working in Nigeria
“ Such policies can help regulate how Nigerians seeking to work outside Nigeria will be treated by their employers “ she said
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission had on Monday disclosed that Omolola Ajayi was rescued from the home of her captor and is now safely in Beirut with the Nigerian Ambassador to Lebanon.
The NIDCOM spokesman, Abdul-Rahman Balogun said in a WhatsApp message, “Update on the trafficked Nigerian girl to Lebanon. She is now happily in the hands of the Nigerian ambassador in Beirut. She will be home soon.”
” Human trafficking has now assumed an epidemic level and there should be a way to rescue our citizens.
“We also need to expose who these traffickers are, so, we need a Multiagency approach to deal with the issue.
