Following months of strike action, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) Hussaini Adamu Federal Polytechnic,Kazaure Chapter after a Congress meeting held on Tuesday, May 20, has announced the suspension of its 10 months old strike.

The Chairman of the union, Comrade Sa’idu Abdullahi, in a communiqué issued after the emergency Congress, said the suspension was to allow the students complete the disrupted second semester of 2012/2013 academic session.

The chairman also informed newsmen that the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) had given approval for the Polytechnic to start 8 new programmes that were not operational, which would have elapsed in the next 2 months if the strike action was sustained.

He, however, said the Kazaure chapter of the union is still in support of the national body, because the issues in contention are actually directed towards the proper strengthening and development of the Polytechnic education in general.

In his reaction, the Rector of the Polytechnic Dr. Kabir Ibrahim Matazu, who is also the chairman Council of Heads of Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology in Nigeria (COHEADS) saluted the sense of maturity and patriotism of the Union members for calling-off the 10 month-old strike and called on the union and Government to use dialogue in resolving all issues rather than resorting to strikes.
