‘I know it is my dream to be in the National Team’ — Alverca Defender Cried On Super Eagles Invitation

Alverca defender Isaac James has revealed that he was overcome with emotion after receiving his first invitation to the Super Eagles.

The 22-year-old left-back was named among the 24 players called up by head coach Eric Chelle for Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

James said the invitation came earlier than he expected despite his impressive start to the season with the Portuguese club.

“I was doing good at the start of the season, but I didn’t expect to get a call-up immediately. I know it is my dream to be in the national team,” James said.

The defender said he was surprised when Chelle contacted him and that the invitation brought him considerable happiness.

“When the coach called me, I was so surprised. I didn’t expect it. I was happy,” he said.

James also disclosed that he cried after learning that he had been selected for the national team, describing the moment as the fulfilment of a long-standing ambition.

“I must confess, I cried. I have been dreaming of playing for the national team. We have good players here, and to be among them, I’m very happy,” he added.

The defender said the news quickly spread among his family members, who began sending him social media posts about his Super Eagles invitation and asking whether the reports were genuine.

James confirmed the news to them and said the reaction at his club was equally positive.

“My club was also happy. I think I’m the first Nigerian guy from the club to be called up to the national team. Everyone was happy. I got a lot of calls,” he said.

James is one of three players receiving their maiden Super Eagles invitation for the September qualifiers, alongside Moses Usor and George Ilenikhena.

Nigeria will face Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau in the two Group L fixtures as the Super Eagles begin their campaign in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
