ICRC charges FG, states on legal framework for missing persons

The International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC, has charged the federal and state governments to establish legal frameworks to support the families of the missing persons in their pursuit.
Committee’s ICRC Families of the missing Field Officer, Precious Binta Yaro gave the charge in Yola Wednesday at the 2023 International Day of the Disappeared commemoration, stressing the need for government’s policies in supporting the families of the missing persons.
Yaro stated that by the records of the ICRC, more than 195,000 missing persons were registered with the Committee’s central tracing Agency and its Family links Network in 2022 across the globe, while 25,000 individuals were reported missing in the North East of Nigeria as a result of violent conflicts.
“In 2018, the ICRC conducted a comprehensive needs assessment, engaging with families in Adamawa,Borno,and Yobe states.This assessment led to the initiation of the Accompaniment program.
“Through this Accompaniment program, the ICRC collaborates with Community volunteers who are families of the missing known as accompaniers while in Yola,more than 400 families including 20 children were supported”Yaro highlighted.
Earlier in her remarks, Deputy Head of sub-delegation-Yola,Fatima Halilu Ibrahim said cases of missing persons represents a global humanitarian tragedy on a large scale which ICRC is working to protect lives and dignity of people affected by armed conflict and to provide them with necessary assistance.
