As the world marked the International Day of Democracy, The Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI), has warned that democratic systems across Africa face mounting threats.

Bukola Idowu, Executive Director of KDI,in a statement on Monday said that democracy is being undermined by insecurity, economic hardship, disinformation, and political polarisation.

He stressed that democracy is not merely a date on the calendar but a daily practice rooted in fairness, accountability, and citizen participation.

“Too many groups, especially women, young people, persons with disabilities, and other marginalised communities, continue to face barriers to participation,” Idowu said.

The group noted that civic space, rather than being protected, is often restricted, weakening public trust in governance.

But KDI insisted that Nigeria and Africa are not doomed to decline, highlighting the resilience of citizens who continue to organise, fact-check, litigate, and volunteer.

“The real test is simple: does democracy work for everyone, or only for a privileged few?” the organisation asked.

KDI outlined its work in strengthening electoral integrity, improving transparency in campaign finance, and expanding civic education as key to sustaining democratic resilience.

The group also announced plans to host a side event at the upcoming UN General Assembly on 18 September, focusing on “Strengthening Democratic Foundations in Africa.”
