The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has reassured Nigerians of the Force’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The assurance was contained in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, on Sunday in Abuja.

The police high command said although Nigeria remains stable, proactive and intelligence-led policing measures have been reinforced nationwide to forestall any spillover effects from the foreign crisis.

Disu has directed Commissioners of Police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to immediately heighten surveillance and intelligence gathering, particularly in the North-West, North-East and North-Central zones.

He also ordered strengthened collaboration with traditional and religious leaders, improved visibility policing around worship centres and public spaces, and swift action against any attempt to incite unrest or sectarian tension.

The IGP warned that Nigeria would not serve as a theatre for foreign conflicts.

According to him, any move to import external ideological or religious tensions into the country will be met with the full weight of the law.

He urged community leaders to continue promoting peace and called on citizens to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding.

The police boss further appealed to Nigerians to promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police formation.
