Seven Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) invited by the Police Service Commission (PSC) for promotion interviews have successfully passed the screening on Friday.
Consequently, they are scheduled to be decorated as Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) by the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, on Monday.
“New AIGs invited for promotion exams have passed,”.
On Thursday evening, it was reported that seven AIGs had been invited for promotion interviews to the rank of DIGs.
The development comes amid plans for the compulsory retirement of some DIGs following the appointment of Disu as the IGP.
According to an internal wireless message from the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja, the interactive promotion examination was scheduled for Friday, March 6, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.
The session took place at the Chairman’s Conference Room on the 6th Floor of the PSC Corporate Headquarters located at Plot 64, Cadastral Zone, Jabi, Abuja.
Those invited to appear before the commission were AIG Zacharia Fera Achinyan, AIG Zango Ibrahim Baba, AIG Isyaku Mohammed, AIG Margaret Agebe Ochalla, AIG Mohammed Abdul Sulaiman, AIG Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, and AIG Umar Shehu Nadada.
The message, issued on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, directed the officers to attend the exercise as scheduled and advised them to refresh their knowledge in their core areas of duty, including professional studies, relevant laws, and local police regulations.
The officers were also instructed to appear in conventional attire comprising a black jacket, beret, and swagger cane.
The promotion exercise forms part of routine career progression in the Nigeria Police Force and is conducted in collaboration with the Police Service Commission, the body responsible for the appointment, promotion, and discipline of senior officers.
Meanwhile, the appointment of a new Acting IGP has once again stirred debate across the country over the controversial practice of compulsory retirement for senior police officers. Historically, the emergence of a new police chief often triggers the exit of several top-ranking officers.
An internal list circulating within the Force indicates that at least eight DIGs, including Yahaya Abubakar (Finance), Adebola Hamzat (Logistics), Adebowale Williams (ICT), Frank Mba (Training), and Basil Idegwu (Research and Planning), were expected to be retired to maintain the command structure.
Reports on Friday also indicated that Mba has retired after 34 years of service.
