The International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), Central Nigeria Office, Abuja, has announced plans to host the 19th edition of its Monthly Lecture Series, with a focus on the role of Islamic cooperative societies in promoting economic resilience, financial inclusion and community development.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Coordinator of the IIIT Central Nigeria Office, Dr Aliyu Tanko, said the lecture would examine how faith-based cooperative systems can strengthen social equity, self-sufficiency and sustainable economic growth.
The lecture, titled “Islamic Cooperative Societies: Evolution & Contributions to Development of the Ummah,” will feature renowned Islamic economist and finance expert, Dr Abdullahi Abubakar Lamido, as the guest speaker.
According to the organisers, Lamido is one of Africa’s leading scholars in Islamic economics and finance, with more than two decades of experience in policy development, research and institutional capacity building.
The statement noted that Lamido, who holds a PhD from the International Islamic University Malaysia, has trained institutions including the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation and Jaiz Bank, while authoring more than 40 publications on waqf, Islamic banking and financial inclusion.
It added that participants would gain insights into the historical evolution of Islamic cooperative models and their transformation into modern socio-economic instruments capable of tackling poverty and expanding access to finance.
The organisers also said the session would provide an interactive platform for scholars, researchers, entrepreneurs and community leaders to engage in discussions and a live question-and-answer session on ethical finance and grassroots development.
The lecture is scheduled to hold virtually via Google Meet on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. WAT, with the Head of the Department of Economics at Baze University, Abuja, Dr Asheikh Maidugu, serving as chairman.
