Information, bedrock upon which temple of democracy is built, says Chair, INEC Press Corps

The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Press Corps, Mr Segun Ojumu has described information as the bedrock upon which the temple of democracy is built.

Ojumu said this on Sunday in nis New Year message to correspondents covering INEC in Abuja.

The Chairman, who lauded his colleagues on their excellent performance on the beat so far, noted that their (the INEC correspondents’) reports have gone a long way in giving voice to the voiceless, power to the electorate, and accountability to those elected.

In the words of Ojumu, “The role you play is nothing short of sacred, as information is the bedrock upon which the temple of democracy is built.

“Your reports give voice to the voiceless, power to the electorate, and accountability to those elected.

“The trust placed in us to uphold these values is a profound responsibility, and your performance has been exemplary.

“As we look ahead to 2024, the horizon is already dotted with key democratic engagements, especially in Ondo and Edo States, along with various bye-elections.

“These are not just events; they are opportunities for us to facilitate a robust democratic process and ensure the will of the people is heard and respected.

“I invite you all to bring forth the same passion, integrity, and excellence as we step into these forthcoming assignments”, he said.

Continuing, the Chairman of the INEC Press Corps said, “In the year to come, I ask for your continued input, your insightful reporting, and your dedication to the truth.

“Let us work together to set the standard for electoral journalism, ensuring that every citizen is well-informed and every vote is counted and reported with the utmost accuracy”, he said

Ojumu expressed the firm optimism that the new year 2024 will be filled with promise, growth, and the pursuit of journalistic excellence. adding, “May 2024 be a year where we not only meet the expectations set before us but exceed them in service to our nation”.
