The Chairman, House of Representatives ad-hoc Committee mandated to interface with Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and other stakeholders, Hon. Aminu Ashiru Mani has expressed satisfaction with the progress made by Kaduna Electric in the provision of modern ICT infrastructure and automation of the company’s customers’ complaints resolution mechanism.
The Mani made the remark yesterday in Kaduna when he led members of the Committee to the Command and Control Center of the Automatic Meter Reading and Geographical Information Systems of Kaduna Electric.
He disclosed that the Committee was in Kaduna in continuation of its consultations with power sector regulator and other critical stakeholders with the view to finding a fair and sustainable tariff regime for the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.
“This Committee was borne out of the resolution of the House to come up with a comprehensive legislative framework that will make the Multi Year Tariff Order, MYTO, fair to all Nigerians and sustainable”, he stated. Earlier, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Kaduna Electric, Engineer Garba Haruna who was represented by Major Pola Bashkar, a member of the expatriate technical team of Kaduna Electric, disclosed that the absence of cost reflective tariff in the electricity market has deprived the industry of the much needed investment. “Most investors are not keen in investing in the power sector because the existing tariff regime approved by the regulator does not guarantee cost recovery; MYTO 2015 does not provide the necessary incentive to attract investment to the sector,” he asserted.
He called for the reduction in the power generation cost and foreign exchange waiver to operators as palliative measure to address to huge revenue shortfall currently being experienced in the electricity market.
