The Nigeria Union of Journalists in collaboration with an Abuja based newsprint medium, New National Star may have concluded plans to organize a One-Day-National Security Conference with the aim of addressing spate of security challenges in the country.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Monday, jointly addressed ahead of the conference by the National President of NUJ, Comrade Christopher Isiguzo and Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of New National Star newspapers, Obinna F. Nwachukwu, they informed that conference was scheduled for Thursday 22 February, 2024.
Isiguzo said that security was everybody’s business, maintaining that the media was a strategic stakeholder in the fight against insecurity.
Continuing, Isiguzo noted that government has been doing a lot to curtail the rising insecurity in the country, stating that more contributions were needed from other sectors, especially the media, to address insecurity.
He said, “Although, it was the primary responsibility of government to ensure security of lives and property of the citizens, he pointed out, however, that the media, as the fourth estate of the realm must rise to occasion in the fight against insecurity.
Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of New National Star newspapers, Obinna F. Nwachukwu, PhD, stressed that the conference, with the theme: NATIONAL SECURITY AND DEVELOPMENT, was designed to bring all key stakeholders together to address security issues with a view to finding a lasting and workable solutions.
He said the conference was also part of the newspaper’s contributions to societal growth and development, adding that It shall bring together, security stakeholders, professionals, political leaders, Civil society organizations, journalists, community and religious leaders, citizens and residents in the country, with the aim of reaching out to each other to collectively address the growing insecurity in the country .
