International Women’s Day: NUJ FCT Chair Calls for Greater Investment in Women

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Grace Ike, has called for increased investment in women through education, mentorship, opportunities and resources, noting that empowering women strengthens families, communities and nations.

In a message to mark the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration, Ike said the theme of this year’s commemoration, “Give To Gain,” highlights the importance of intentionally supporting women to unlock their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society.

According to her, investing in women goes beyond supporting individuals, as it creates a ripple effect that benefits institutions, communities and national development.

“For me, this year’s celebration carries a deeply personal meaning,” she said, noting that her emergence as the first female Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council reflects the possibilities that arise when women are given the opportunity to lead and excel.

Ike stated that her leadership journey was made possible by the courage of many women who broke barriers, challenged stereotypes and refused to accept limitations placed on their ambitions.

She noted that the theme “Give To Gain” aptly captures the impact of empowering women, adding that when women are supported, newsrooms become more inclusive, storytelling becomes richer and governance becomes more responsive.

The NUJ FCT Chairman commended female journalists across Nigeria for their resilience and professionalism, saying they continue to break new ground in the media industry while shaping public discourse and mentoring younger colleagues.

She emphasized that women in journalism have demonstrated strong commitment to truth, accountability and public service despite challenges in the profession.

However, Ike stressed that celebrations such as International Women’s Day should move beyond symbolic recognition to concrete actions that promote gender equality.

She called on media organisations, institutions and society at large to deliberately mentor young female journalists, create safe and supportive workplaces, and provide more leadership opportunities for women.

Ike also referenced the United Nations’ call for this year’s celebration, “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” describing it as a timely reminder that the pursuit of gender equality requires collective effort.

She urged governments, institutions, media organisations and communities to work together to dismantle barriers that continue to hinder women’s progress.

The NUJ FCT Chairman used the occasion to celebrate women within the union, the FCT media community and across Nigeria, commending their courage, intellect and dedication.

According to her, the achievements of women in journalism continue to inspire a new generation of young women who now see leadership as attainable.

She therefore called for renewed commitment to providing more opportunities, mentorship, support and recognition for women.

“When women rise, journalism rises, our communities thrive and our nation grows stronger,” she said.

Ike added that empowering women ultimately benefits society as a whole, stressing that “when we give to women, we truly gain as a society.”
