The International Press Institute(IPI) Nigeria on Wednesday announced the relaunch and escalation of its campaign against Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago; Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno; and former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over alleged violations of press freedom.
IPI Nigeria President, Musikilu Mojeed, made the disclosure in Abuja during the opening of the organisation’s Press Freedom Hub.
Mojeed, who is also the Editor-in-Chief of Premium Times, said the decision followed the failure of the affected individuals to address concerns earlier raised by the institute.
He recalled that the trio were named in the organisation’s “Book of Infamy” in December 2025 for actions deemed hostile to media freedom.
He said, “At the time, we deliberately refrained from launching a broader campaign out of respect for the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, who appealed for time to intervene.
“We allowed room for dialogue and corrective action. Regrettably, no such action has been taken.”
Mojeed stated that the issues leading to their indictment remained “valid, unaddressed, and ongoing,” necessitating renewed action.
“From this platform, we are announcing the relaunch and escalation of our efforts against these individuals and others listed,” he added.
He stressed that IPI Nigeria would initiate a global accountability campaign aimed at compelling compliance with democratic standards.
“We do not take this step lightly, but silence in the face of persistent violations is not an option,” he said.
Speaking on the newly inaugurated facility, Mojeed described the Press Freedom Hub as a turning point in the organisation’s advocacy.
“This is not just a building; it is a statement that the defence of press freedom in Nigeria is entering a new phase—more structured, more visible, and more resolute,” he said.
He added that the hub would serve as a centre for policy engagement, dialogue, and continuous monitoring of media freedom in Nigeria.
Mojeed called on government, civil society, media practitioners, and the international community to support the initiative.
“Together, we can build a media environment that is free, safe, and truly independent,” he said.
The IPI Nigeria boss noted that the facility would also provide a secure space for collaboration and the advancement of independent journalism across the country.
