The Global Defence Consortium of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu (GDC) has raised an alarm over what it described as an alleged plan to disrupt a peaceful demonstration scheduled to hold in Abuja on Thursday in support of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
A statement issued on Wednesday and signed by Njoku Jude Njoku, Esq., on behalf of the group, claimed it had received “credible intelligence” suggesting that certain individuals posing as protesters might attempt to cause disturbances near the Federal High Court during proceedings in Kanu’s ongoing legal case.
According to the GDC, “there are plans by some persons, disguised as unknown elements, to create chaos and attack innocent people within the vicinity of the court during the sitting on October 16, 2025.”
The statement further alleged that the intention of such disruption “is to create a scene of insecurity that could be used as justification to restrict movement in Abuja, thereby frustrating the peaceful #FreeMaziNnamdiKanuNow march planned by supporters.”
The group urged both local and international stakeholders to ensure that the demonstration remains peaceful and that no harm comes to participants.
“We call on the United States Government, the European Union, the African Union, and the Government of Canada to take note of this information and to caution the Nigerian authorities to ensure that the rights of peaceful protesters are protected,” the statement read.
Njoku added that the GDC “stands for peace, law, and justice” and would not be deterred from continuing its advocacy for Kanu’s release.
The Nigerian government has not issued any statement or acted in a way to show it is against the protest as pre-protest mobilisation is ongoing across Abuja and is being led by Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate and activist.
Officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) could not be reached for comment in the absence of a spokesman as of the time of filing this report.
The legal counsel however said, “We will not be intimidated, and no amount of orchestrated violence will stop the call for freedom and fairness for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” he said.
The group also appealed to security agencies to maintain professionalism and avoid any actions that could lead to the breakdown of law and order during the protest.
