Jigawa govt trains 1,350 traditional rulers on conflict resolution

The Jigawa Justice Sector and Law Reform Commission has trained no fewer than 1,350 traditional rulers across the state on conflict resolution and mediation.

Stating this over the weekend at a one day summit on traditional justice system reform, the chairman of the occasion Justice Tijjani Abubakar said the commission has achieved the feat from 2013 to date.

Justice Tijjani Abubakar, told the gathering of traditional rulers comprising of Emirs of Fika, Zamfara, Hadejia, Dutse, Daura, Bauchi, Ringim and Borno that, “the Justice For All (J4A), intervention in the programme has resulted in the quick, fair and equitable dispute resolution under the traditional justice system in two pilot districts of Sakwaya and Dutse Emirate”.

Justice Tijjani Abubakar, who explained that the summit which is collaborating between the Jigawa state government, Justice sector and Law Reform Commission and Justice for all, DFID programme has also trained 238 traditional rulers on the two pilot districts on mediation.

He said additional batch of 191 traditional rulers comprising of council members and district heads from the 5 Emirates of the state are currently undergoing training on Nigerian legal system, alternative dispute resolution (ADR), record keeping, and observance of human rights issues under the law and development of code of ethics.

In his remark, His Eminence, the Shehu of Borno and Deputy President General of Jama’atu Nasril Islam, Dr. Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, charged other states to emulate the Jigawa state by way of replicating the system in their various domains.

The Shehu of Borno, who represented the Sultan of Sokoto said, “For ages leaders in this part of the country have been known for resolving disputes in their domains in addition to their roles in admonishing peaceful coexistence, harmonious relationship and promotion of security and well-being of our people”.
