President Goodluck Jonathan has appointed AIG Suleiman Abba as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
This was due to the retirement of the former IGP, Mohammed Abubakar, who completed his 35 years of service today.
A statement issued by Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati, said the appointment takes immediate effect.
AIG Abba, until his appointment, was the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 7, comprising Abuja, Kaduna and Niger states.
To this effect, he has replaced the former Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Abubakar who has proceeded on statutory retirement today having completed 35 years in service.
Meanwhile, the incoming Inspector-General of Police, who is a lawyer, hails from Jigawa state and is an alumnus of the Nigerian Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS).
Positions previously held by him in the Police include Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Deputy Force Secretary and Commissioner of Police, Rivers state.
