The Senate, at its plenary on Wednesday, donated the sum of N50 million to the three security officers and the two teachers who lost their lives in the kidnap of Oyo school children who were recently rescued.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, while making the announcement said the Senate “copiously and seriously deliberated and applauded President Bola Tinubu and security agencies from the Chief of Army Staff to the Director General of DSS to the Inspector General of Police and, of course, to the Minister of Defense on the rescue of Oyo school children who were in captivity for about 56 days.
He went further to say that the Senate also noted the fact that three of the personnel who went for the rescue operations, an Army Lieutenant from Adanwa, a police sergeant and another private soldier lost their lives and many were wounded in the course of trying to rescue those children.
In addition, Akpabio said two teachers that were in captivity with their children, were also murdered.
Therefore, the Senate haven earlier applauded the government and the security agencies the previous day pleaded that “the same be extended to any other part of the country where there may be any Nigerian in captivity”.
Akpabio then said “today we just felt after discussion with the leadership, that we want to also support the victims’ families, like the young lieutenant was just 28 years old when he died in that operation. So, we are sending a token of 50 million Naira to them to be divided into the five diseased families. The family of the two teachers, the family of the three operatives who lost their lives, N10 million each.
On behalf of the Senate, Akpabio directed the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele with a few other senators to “present the token of N10 million to support the children each of the families of the diseased left behind”.
