The Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KCPC) has said that it has succeeded in confiscating fake and expired goods worth over N1billion within three months in the state.
The agency also disclosed that within the period under review13 people were arrested, while it had secured nine arrest warrant, as most of the suspects were at large.
The Acting Managing Director of the CPC, Baffa Babba Dan’agundi disclosed this yesterday while briefing newsmen at Kano NUJ Press Centre.
He said the fake goods of those that ran away are being kept inside the warehouse, adding that most of the seizures were effected at Sabongari and Singer markets.
According to him, some of those arrested pleaded for plea bargain which is allowed in law, adding that such offenders have to agree to forfeit the goods confiscated from them, as well paid the fine imposed by the court before they are released.
He further disclosed that the” fake drugs confiscated from those nine people on the run can not be burnt until they were apprehended and taken to court, “
He added that because of relocation of luxury buse out of Sabongari to outskirt of the state capital has drastically reduced transportation of fake and expired goods from Southern part of the country.
According to him, six restaurant workers tested positive to hepatitis B out of three restaurants already visited ,noting that this is deadly, hence the need for them to send their workers to laboratory for test
“we are taken this test very serious and they must get health certificate ,indicated them as qualified tested restaurants because that is the only way to safe guide the lives of people who patronise them for food.
“Since it is difficult to transport these fake drugs through luxury buses ,they were now using Dangote and BUA trucks to deliver the goods,” Dan’agundi alleged.
Dan’agundi however stated that “though the Dangote and BUA managements were not aware of this shady attitude being perpetrated by their drivers, I warn that whoever is involved in this illegal business would be arrested and taken to court.”
Commenting on the recent order for immediate closure of all restaurant, bakery homes, drinking water producing companies and other food processing companies without health certificate, Dan’agundi said “it is in the right direction to sabe lives from unscrupulous people.”
