Kano govt treats 6,000 TB patients in 2013

Kano state government said it has provided free Tuberculosis (TB) treatments to more than 6000 patients in 2013 through TB treatment centres across 44 local governments in the state.

This was disclosed by the state Commissioner of Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf at a press conference organised to mark the World Tuberculosis Day, held at the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH), in Kano yesterday.

Yusuf, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Alhaji Dahiru Musa, added that the state government has succeeded in establishment of 230 health facilities for treatment of the dreaded disease in the 44 local governments in the State.

” It is the desire and major thrust of this administration since its first coming that the citizens of Kano enjoy the best health care possible. It is in this regard that free treatment of TB, using the international standard of TB care started during the first tenure of the of Kano state governor, Dr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso with the establishment of 5 TB treatment centres in the State. This giant stride has paid up handsomely as there are, as at today, more than 230 health facilities providing free TB treatment across the 44 local governments in the State. These TB treatment centres, in 2013 alone, have provided free TB treatment to more than 6000 patients in Kano state.” He said

The commissioner added that the state government, in partnership with international health organisations, has established the first ultra-modern treatment centre for Drug Resistant TB in northern Nigeria in Kano, adding that the centre has treated more than 50 patients across the region.
