Kano: NTI trains 500 teachers in science subjects

National Teachers Institute, NTI, has trained 500 Secondary School science and mathematics teachers from Kano State.
The teachers were from Kano State Science and Technical Schools Board and were sponsored for a six- day capacity building workshop by their State Government.
NTI’s Director General, Professor Garba Azare at the capacity building workshop for the teachers held in Kaduna, said it was the first time in the history of the institute that 500 teachers were sponsored by a state governor.
According to him, NTI is mandated to organise programmes for upgrading and updating of serving teachers at different levels.
He said the institute has been engaged in this training and re-training programmes for over 40 years now.
Professor Azare, said over the years NTI has trained teachers across the federation in different fields and different levels in partnership with various stakeholders ranging from the Federal Government, State
Government, NGOs and Private organizations.
“We are very happy for this partnership with Kano State Government and the Science and Technical Schools Board, Kano to train 500 teachers for this particular Capacity Building Workshop for teachers of
Mathematics and Sciences,” he said.
The teachers were trained on Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science.
Professor Azare explained that teaching and learning of science subjects have been very cumbersome for teachers and pupils.
“That was why the Federal Government in collaboration with JICA initiated the Strengthen Mathematics and Science Education (SMASE) Nigeria Project to equip teachers of these subjects with skill sets and knowledge that will make the teaching and learning process more meaningful, effective and interesting,” he said.
