Kano PDP rallies behind Jonathan, reaffirms party unity

The Kano State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has thrown its weight behind former President as the party’s presidential standard-bearer for the 2027 election, while insisting that recent defections have not weakened its structure in the state.
Speaking at a press briefing in Kano, the state chairman of the PDP, said the party had fully aligned with the decision of the National Executive Committee regarding Jonathan’s candidacy.
According to Kibiya, the Kano chapter reviewed the position adopted by the party’s national leadership and resolved to support it in the interest of party unity and constitutional order.
“Kano PDP has reviewed the national executive’s decision regarding the presidential candidacy of former President Goodluck Jonathan. We acknowledge and respect the processes that led to this decision and affirm our support for their right to determine the party’s national trajectory within the framework of our constitution and legal guidelines,” he said.
The party chairman also sought to downplay concerns arising from the defection of some PDP stakeholders to the APC, maintaining that the party remained united and firmly established across Kano State.
“We acknowledge that some stakeholders have chosen to move away from the PDP to APC. Let me state unequivocally that the PDP in Kano State remains solid, cohesive and firmly rooted in our shared values and objectives,” Kibiya stated.
He praised members for the peaceful conduct of the party’s recent primaries, describing the exercise as evidence of the PDP’s commitment to transparency, due process and internal democracy.
Kibiya further condemned the disruption of the party’s special national convention in Abuja, where the PDP was expected to formally present its presidential candidate.
According to him, such actions undermine democratic principles, freedom of association and constitutional rights, warning that they could have broader implications for Nigeria’s democratic development.
He called on political stakeholders across the country to embrace peaceful political engagement and respect the rule of law in resolving disputes.
The PDP chairman assured members and residents of Kano State that the party remained focused on delivering credible leadership and policies aimed at improving security, creating jobs and enhancing public services.
