The Kano State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna has revealed that about 3 million tons of rice is expected to be harvested this season in the state.
Gawuna, who is the state’s Deputy Governor, disclosed this to journalists on the achievements recorded by the administration of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje under the Ministry.
According to him, the state has recorded increasing rice and other grains harvest in Kano since the inception of Ganduje administration in 2015.
“From the time His Excellency Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje assumed office in 2015, there is significant increase every year in whatever we harvest in the State.
“For example, in 2015, we harvested about 690,000 tons of rice, in 2016, we harvested 1.5 million tones, in 2017 we harvested over 2 million tons of rice and definitely this year 2018, we are far ahead of what we have done in 2017 harvesting to about 3 million tons of rice, “ Gawuna was quoted as saying in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Hassan Musa Fagge.
He said provision of adequate and qualitative fertilizer remains one of the best policy introduced by the current administration to boost farming activities in the State.
“ Even though fertilizer is one of the fundamental aspect inputs to Farmers, Farmers continuously suffered from lack of qualitative fertilizer, lack of adequate fertilizer and lack of cost effectiveness in Fertilizer for the past years, “ Said the statement
He added that so many efforts were being made to produce qualitative and affordable fertilizer by reviving the Kano State Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO) which suffered some neglects during the previous administrations
He said, despite enormous challenges affecting agricultural development in the country, in terms of mechanization and technology, the Ganduje administration was able to reduce rice importation, thereby saving billions of naira every year.
