Kano varsity set to take over state-owned medical facility as teaching hospital

The Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano has said that it is working towards the takeover of Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital, a state-owned facility as its teaching hospital.
The Vice Chancellor university, Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa said that the university was working towards ensuring that the hospital fulfilled the requirements of being the university’s teaching hospital.
The VC stated this to journalists yesterday, shortly after he led the management team of the institution to a tour to the university’s College of Health Sciences and Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital.
Prof. Kurawa said, since his assumption of office, he had visited different facilities of the university, aimed at taking all the necessary actions to ensure that the university move to greater heights.
The vice Chancellor maintained that sequel to the accreditation visit, made by the National Universities Commission and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, a lot of recommendations were made by the two bodies, aimed at fulfilling the requirements of full accreditation.
Among the requirements, as outlined by the councils, is to build student hostels and block of offices in the teaching Hospital, adding that the purpose of the visit was to asses the availability of land and advise the state government for the commencement of construction of the needed infrastructures.
Earlier in his remarks, the Chief Medical Director, Muhammad Abdullahi wase General Specialist Hospital, Dr Mustapha Shuaibu Hikima said the hospital is working to ensure that it meet all the requirements needed for a teaching hospital.
He said the facility, which is one of the largest in the state, has been visited by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria for accreditation, adding that the hospital has been scored high in terms of requirements to be a teaching hospital.
Dr Hikima also expresses delight that the hospital has since commenced some medical Post Graduate programmes, adding that over 25 students are currently studying in the facility in different programmes.
He solicited the support of the vice Chancellor in fine tuning modalities of actualizing the take off of the teaching tospital.
