The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has revealed that Katsina state, Northestern Nigeria, has the highest rate of cases of malnutrition in the country.
Michael Banda, Senior Education Manager, UNICEF, Kano Field Office, disclosed this during his presentation at Evidence-based Advocacy and Policy Dialogue For Increased Funding To the ECCDE Subjector in Kano, Katsina and Jigawa States, held in Kano yesterday.
According to Banda, health organizations like World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF are putting mechanisms in place to address the situation.
In the presentation, titled; Basic Education Strategic Priorities and Programmatic Shift, Banda noted that malnutrition would cause stunt among the children in Katsina, which would also hinder their early education.
He also noted that to achieve the desired goal in early childhood education, malnutrition and stunt must be checked squarely.
Banda also cautioned parents against taking their 0-5 years children to care homes.
According to him, “parents should stop taking their children to institutions for care. Parents should take care of their children at home. They should learn technics on how to raise and take a good care of children,”
He also advocated for provision of plays for children in pre primary education.
“Pre-primary education must foster a play-based sessions that would prepare a child for a full school. It makes child associate and familiarize to make him fully prepared for life in nursery and primary schools.
“Sometimes parents lack parenting education. In this case they should see and acquire parenting knowledge to prepare their children for school and future education,” he advised.
