Kebbi flood victims get N25m relief assistance

Over one thousand flood victims, consisting of 384 households, have at the weekend received relief assistance amounting to N25 million from the committee set up by Kebbi state government, headed by the Wazirin Gwandu, Alh. Abdullahi Umar, in conjunction with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
The committee chairman, Alh. Abdullahi Umar, who is also the Wazirin Gwandu, during the distribution of the cash assistance to the victims at Abdullahi Fodio Camp, Birnin Kebbi , one of the centers designated to accommodate the August flood victims, explained that the governor directed the immediate relief assistance of N25 million to only the flood victims at the Abdullahi Fodio camp.
According to the chairman, ” after thorough assessment by the committee after the flood disaster, which led to registration of the victims, the governor has given approval for disbursement of various sums of money, amounting to 25 million, to flood victims camped at Abdullahi Fodio center and it is expected that the victims vacate the premises as soon as they collect the assistance; but one week grace is given to those who have not repaired their houses”, he said.
Waziri further explained to the victims that the relief is categorised according to the nature of their rooms. He said that those with mud rooms will collect N44,016.66k , those with cement rooms will collect N61,166.66k, and those in the rented house shall share N22,000 each between the landlord and the victim tenant.
He urged the victims to properly utilize the assistance they received and also reminded them that the gesture was never compensation but rather, a relief assistance to cushion their hardship.
One of the victims A’ishatu Shehu (53) who spoke to Peoples Daily shortly after collecting the cash assistance, commended the government for the assistance and called on the well- to- do in the society to do the same.
The Executive Director of SEMA, Alh. Chindo Jega, while speaking to newsmen at the occasion assured the victims of justice and equity in distribution of the relief.
