In a fervent critique of the state government’s response to the abduction of female students from Gusau University, the Zamfara Conflict Resolution Concern Forum (ZCRC) has called for the declaration of a state of emergency in the state. The group alleges that Governor Lawal is exhibiting double standards and politicizing the security crisis.

The ZCRC, led by Chairman Tukur Sabi Gusau, expressed its dismay over recent video clips and photos depicting state government officials negotiating with bandit leaders. This starkly contrasts with the government’s prior stance against negotiations with criminals. According to Gusau, “It is unfortunate that the government of Dauda Lawal is being hypocritical. We reiterate our demand for the federal government to declare a state of emergency in the state as the only remaining option if it is genuinely committed to resolving the situation.”

The group further criticized Governor Lawal’s leadership, citing a lack of capacity, preparedness, and political will to effectively address the crisis. The recent footage of the Commissioner negotiating with the bandits is seen as evidence of indecision and instability in the face of a state in turmoil.

“While the Governor grapples with the situation, the families of the kidnapped students are suffering in agony and despair. Their pleas for swift and decisive action from the government have fallen on deaf ears,” Gusau emphasized. “The longer the government delays, the greater the danger to these innocent young women. All stakeholders must unite to find a solution to this crisis.”

The call to action extends to civil society organizations, religious leaders, and the general public. According to Dantani, a representative of the group, “We must all unite behind a common goal: to bring back our girls safe and sound. Only then can we truly say that justice has been served and that our society is free from fear and insecurity.”

The group acknowledges that whether the federal government heeds their call remains uncertain. However, what is unquestionable is that the safety and well-being of the abducted female students must be the top priority, and all possible efforts should be exerted to secure their release.
