There is no doubt that Africa stands at a crossroads, grappling with a myriad of systemic and longtime economic challenges that hinder progress, prosperity and perpetuate dependency on foreign nations for most of its needs, while also nursing great potential for growth, development and advancement.
However, the current economic realities show that Africa is at vital moment in history with mounting pressure on how to rediscover and reposition itself for better economic advancement that will meet the yearning of its ever-growing population. There is a growing need for an economic retool across the continent, rooted in the principles of mutual cooperation.
Tuesday next week, the 2024 Korea-Africa Summit will be held in Ilsan where a good number of African leaders, senior Korean and African government officials, and corporate business executives will gather to review performance, discuss existing challenges and chart future pathways into the future of Korea and Africa relations. The summit with the theme: “The Future We Make Together: Shared Growth, Sustainability, and Solidarity.” will move to Seoul on Wednesday for Korea-Africa Business Summit where Heads of State or Government and business leaders of Korea and Africa will jointly participate
While it is meant to forge strategic partnerships and explore investment opportunities, the participants will no doubt gain important insights from industry experts and business thought leaders. Principally, Korea has advanced in terms of technology and overall development. As a business and technology hub for Asia and serving as the location of headquarters of multinationals and major business operations for a large number of hi-tech firms, was the ideal location to facilitate the exchange of ideas and strategies that will shape the future of Korea-Africa economic relations and private sector-led economic growth both in the Korea and on the African continent.
Speeches and discussions would be delivered to state the aim of the summit and give it the much-needed direction that will bring out strategic framework for progress, conversation and interfacing would be held to strengthen ties. The presence of large numbers of African leaders and representatives as many had indicated interest to attend will square the summit up as a platform for high-level discussions and economic partnerships between Korea and Africa.
However, most economic experts have called for deeper economic ties and trade between Korea and African countries, particularly Nigeria. It will not just be a matter of convenience; it’s a strategic imperative for unlocking the full potential of both regions. For African nations to move towards economic prosperity and abundance, trade relations with our brothers and sisters in the Korea must be promoted effectively to boost our economic wellbeing. The summit creates that opportunity to heighten it.
A good number of Africans who are working and studying comfortably in Korea serves as a good reminder of our shared heritage and interconnectedness. Many Africans are right now living wonderfully in Korea imbibing their culture and embracing their way of life. Their inter connectedness laid the foundation for the vibrant economic and cultural relation that thrive in Korea and Africa.
Indeed, there exists a wealth of untapped economic and cultural synergies waiting to be harnessed for the mutual benefit of our peoples. African governments’ commitment to deepening ties between Korea, and other African nations underscores the importance of strengthening connections across the Atlantic. By fostering direct flights between Korea and Nigeria, we can facilitate greater trade, investment, and cultural exchange, leading to a myriad of multiplier effects.
Pundits had in the past hammered on the great potential for Korea-African nations to forge significantly greater trade and investment linkages, by bolstering economic cooperation, to stimulate growth and development, creating opportunities for businesses, entrepreneurs, and communities on both sides of the divide thereby creating new ideas, inventing new development corridors, lifting people out of poverty and spreading prosperity.
Speaking on the Korea-Africa Summit, Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Kim Pankyu told newsmen about his plans to work on expanding the economic exchanges between Korea and Nigeria.
Kim said that promoting economic partnership had always been the focus since the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the two countries 44 years ago.
He informed that Nigeria was already Korea’s top five trading partners in Africa and posited that more can be done given the fact that the current Nigerian government was actively carrying out economic reform to improve business environment in Nigeria.
According to him, “I will introduce this change to Korean companies and encourage them to venture into Nigeria and make investment. I will explore ways to deepen security cooperation drawing on my expertise in military and security affairs.
“In particular, I would like to focus on promoting cooperation on maritime security because securing maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea is essential not only for coastal countries including Nigeria but also for countries passing through this region including Korea. In addition, I intend to expand Korea’s support for capacity building of the Nigerian military and security officers.
“Last but not least I will try to facilitate people-to-people exchange between the two countries. I believe culture has the power to connect people and improve understanding of each other. Korean Culture Center in Abuja has played an important role in introducing Korean culture in Nigeria so far.
“I will do my best to provide Nigerians with more opportunities to experience various Korean cultural contents. I will also explore ways to let more Nigerian students to study in Korea” he said.
Kim expressed optimism that the first Korea-Africa Summit to be held in June in Seoul would be a momentous occasion for the relations between Korea and Africa, and also Korea and Nigeria.
“The inaugural Korea-Africa Summit is expected to be the largest international gathering under the current administration. This reflects President Yoon Suk-Yeol’s commitment to fostering a mutually beneficial, sustainable, and strategic long-term partnership with Africa, aligning with Korea’s vision of becoming a Global Pivotal State.
“This marks a significant step in Korea’s comprehensive strategy to engage more deeply with the Global South, reflecting our commitment to global inclusiveness and cooperation.
He revealed that Korea will host many side events on this occasion including Korea-Africa Business Summit and multiple forums on ICT, health, tourism and energy.
“These events will help us come up with practical and concrete measures to expand cooperation. During the Summit, there will be plenty of opportunities for Nigeria and Korea to explore ways to expand their bilateral economic and cultural exchanges both between governments and private sectors. In a nutshell, I believe the upcoming Korea-Africa Summit will set a new milestone in the relationship between Korea and Africa” he assured.
However, I am of the conviction that deeper economic ties between Korea and Africa would automatically address pressing economic and development challenges confronting Africa. By leveraging on our collective strength and resources as partners in progress, we can work for sustainable development practices and secure global action to accelerate economic growth that will uplift our living condition for good.
As Korean government and its business community are stretching out their hands of fellowship to Africa, we must be serious minded to take advantage of the gesture by deploying our economic potentials during the summit to make this gesture being extended by Korea a profitable venture that will maximize our economic potentials.
Not only that Nigeria, as the biggest economy in Africa, must take the lead in this respect, more importantly, we must unite in our commitment to forging a stronger, more vibrant partnership between Korea and Africa, realizing the full potential of our shared future.
