Labour centre lauds FG over SURE-P

Date:

From Ahmed Kaigama, Bauchi

The Principal, Federal Labour and Productivity Centre Bauchi, Mr. Gbokis Jatau has commended Federal Government over the creation of Subsidy Re-investment Programme (SURE-P) in the country, just as he said the programme has put much development in the center.

Mr. Jatau stated this yesterday, while speaking to newsmen in Bauchi, stressing that initially, lack of classroom space and workshop capacity has been the reason for admitting only few students.

He said “With the new structures put in place by the programme henceforth, we would admit more students

“With the expansion of workshop now, we can take in more students and even, more trade can come; initially, our constraints were lack of space, but with the expansion, we now have more classrooms and workshop space; we can include other trades that were not been done before now”, the principal said.

According to him, the programme have constructed a new female hostel as well as renovated the male hostel; provided an overhead water tank and expanded the workshops, with a promise to provide a 200 KVA generating plant.

He added that they would collaborate more with government agencies and even the private sector on training their staff on some skills.

Mr. Jatau lamented that most graduates roaming the streets today are not marketable. “In fact, a lot of our graduates are not marketable or employable because they lack skills, and this is where we believe that a lot of them can gain most through our computer programme; at the end you become marketable”, he stated.

He emphasised that, aside from parents’ sponsored students, the institution partner with organisations like the Police Division in Yelwa, on the training of some youths to reduce youth restiveness and with the aim of making them self-reliant.

Jatau decried that the institution is going through hard financial times, as it had to make do with the little stipend collected from students to run the school and therefore, appealed to politicians and other wealthy individuals to come to the aid of the school.
