The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) said it sealed 15 companies in the last two weeks for failing to remit N34.7 million personal income taxes of their workers.
The Head, Distrain Unit, of LIRS, Mrs Folasade Coker-Afolayan, said this on Sunday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
She said that the tax liabilities were for period ranging from one year to three years.
Coker-Afolayan reiterated that tax payment was a civic responsibility of citizens whose proceeds were being used by government to provide the infrastructure.
“Tax is a major source of government revenue. It enables government to provide infrastructure and improve citizens’ standard of living,” she said.
Coker-Afolayan said that the LIRS would continue to sanction tax defaulters. She said that some employers of labour were in the habit of deducting workers’ taxes without remitting them to the government.
She promised that LIRS would continue to enforce tax laws to recover funds belonging to the state government.
Coker-Afolayan advised companies to remit taxes promptly to avoid embarrassment, adding that it was a criminal offence to tamper with government’s seals on sealed companies.
NAN recalls that the LIRS sealed 44 companies in the last two months over non-remittance of N460.6 million personal income taxes of their workers. (NAN)
