In a major political development ahead of the 2027 elections, Mustapha Sule Lamido has emerged as the consensus governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jigawa State, reinforcing his position in the state’s evolving political landscape.
The motion for his adoption was moved by Dr. Aminu Taura, a former Secretary to the State Government, and seconded by Wada Abubakar Dokaji. The process was overseen by the PDP State Chairman, Babandi Ibrahim, who ensured a smooth exercise as party members endorsed the decision through a voice vote, reflecting broad internal agreement.
Lamido, a businessman and politician, is the son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido and has remained a prominent figure in the state’s political arena. He previously contested as the PDP governorship candidate in the 2023 election, where he mounted a strong challenge in a highly competitive race.
In that election, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and incumbent governor, Umar Namadi, secured 618,449 votes to retain office. Lamido polled 368,726 votes, while Ibrahim Ringim of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) garnered 37,156 votes, highlighting a three-way contest that reshaped the state’s political dynamics.
Despite the outcome, Lamido has remained influential within the PDP, maintaining a strong grassroots base and reinforcing his role within the party’s leadership structure across the state.
Supporters view him as an emerging political force and a continuation of an established political legacy. He has consistently emphasized youth empowerment, institutional renewal, and governance reforms as central to his agenda.
Speaking after his emergence, Lamido called for unity and collective action to tackle what he described as worsening socio-economic conditions in Jigawa State.
