Lawyer sues IG, FCT CP over breach of human rights

Date:

high_court_lagos_federalA legal practitioner, Mr. Sebastine Abang, on Wednesday sued the Inspector General of Police, Abubakar Mohammed, and two other officers for N8 million for alleged breach of his fundamental human right.

Others joined in the suit, file at FCT High Court in Wuse Zone 2, are the FCT Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joseph Mbu, and Mr. Daniel Musa, an officer in Dawaki Police Station, Kubwa.

The Abuja-based lawyer alleged that he had on May 5 gone to Dawaki Police Station where his client, Mr. Ade Adeboye, was detained by the police.

He told the court that he told them at the station that his client was detained over a civil matter that could be settled amicably.

Abang said he requested for bail of his client which annoyed the police officers, and they beat him to a state of coma.

He said that he had served the officers the originating court process through the office of the FCT Commissioner of Police.

Abang prayed the court for enforcement of his human right under the 1999 Constitution and under Article 4 and 5 of Africa Charter 1986.

He is also seeking public apology to be published in two national dailies.

Justice Valentine Ashi said all the defendants ought to be served the originating court processes before hearing could commence on the matter.

Ashi adjourned the case until July 31 for hearing and ruled that hearing notice should also be served on the defendants. (NAN)
