A coalition of young voices from the North, operating under the banner of Northern Youth for Peace and Progress (NYPP), has raised serious concerns regarding the continuous leadership of Senator Shehu Umar Buba as Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence. This followed allegations connected to a leaked video.
At a well-attended press briefing in Kaduna on Monday, the group’s coordinator, Comrade Hassan Sadau, urged Senate President Chief Godswill Akpabio to act swiftly, describing the situation as “a matter of national urgency and public trust.”
The NYPP, known for its advocacy around security, youth empowerment, and good governance in Northern Nigeria, expressed deep concern about the implications of the recent allegations against Senator Buba and their potential impact on the nation’s security architecture.
Central to the petition is a purported leaked video reportedly linking the Senator to activities that allegedly benefit bandit groups operating in the troubled North-West. According to the NYPP, the video features scenes in which large sums of cash are loaded into vehicles within Senator Buba’s premises, accompanied by numerous motorcycles—similar to those used by criminal elements in rural attacks—parked nearby. The video also allegedly shows the presence of a controversial cleric known to have links with some bandit groups.
While the authenticity of the footage has yet to be officially verified, the youth group insists that such serious claims necessitate an immediate and impartial inquiry, especially in light of the senator’s influential role in national security oversight.
