Lecturer wants military law incorporated into varsities curriculum

A tutor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Abuja, Dr. Umakwe Abuja, has advocated that military law should be incorporated into the law curriculum of Nigerian Universities.
He said if the military legal system is incorporated, it would enable the students of the law to be enlightened on both civil and military legal systems.
Abugu said this in an interview with newsmen during a maiden seminar organized by Yunusa Usman chambers of the University of Abuja.
His words: “The issue of military law hardly comes up in any of our curriculum or syllabus we teach none or very few that has special relationship with military law and military justice”.
He noted that military law was not different from evil law, saying that military law is subject to the same law we are subject to as members of civil society.
Presenting a paper entitled “Protecting the Rights of the Accused Under the Military Justice System in Nigeria”, Deputy Director (Army) at the Directorate of Military Legal Services, Colonel Emmanuel O.
Ugwu, explained that the military justice system had checks and balances that guard against the miscarriage of justice and protect accused military personnel from over-zealous commanding officers.
On his part, the President of Yunusa Usman Chambers, the organizers of the maiden lecture, Mr Samuel Nnaji, said the lecture would impact tremendously on the knowledge of the lecturers and students who knew very little about military justice system.
