A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Farouk Aliyu, has dismissed calls for President Bola Tinubu to resign, insisting that Nigerians should be allowed to determine his political future through the ballot box in 2027.
Aliyu made the remarks during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, monitored in Abuja, on Thursday while reacting to demands by opposition figures who have urged the president to step down over the country’s economic and security challenges.
According to the APC stalwart, calls for a president’s resignation are a common feature of democratic politics and should be viewed as part of the opposition’s role in holding the government accountable.
He noted that members of the APC made similar demands of previous administrations when they occupied opposition positions before assuming power at the federal level.
“The President does not have to resign. Nigerians should decide at the polls,” Aliyu stated, arguing that the ultimate verdict on any administration belongs to the electorate.
He said opposition parties were merely carrying out their expected function by criticising the government and calling for changes in leadership.
Aliyu maintained that while the country continues to face economic, security and governance challenges, the Tinubu administration is working to address them and improve conditions for citizens.
He acknowledged the difficulties confronting Nigerians but stressed that efforts were ongoing to tackle the issues and prevent them from worsening.
The APC chieftain further argued that democratic systems provide voters with the opportunity to assess the performance of elected leaders at the appropriate time through elections rather than through political pressure campaigns.
His comments come amid increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition parties intensifying criticism of the federal government and seeking to build momentum against the ruling party.
The debate over President Tinubu’s performance has become a recurring feature of the political landscape as parties position themselves for the next electoral cycle.
While opposition figures continue to question the administration’s handling of key national issues, APC leaders have repeatedly defended the government’s policies and urged Nigerians to assess its record at the end of its mandate.
Aliyu’s remarks reinforce the ruling party’s position that any decision on the president’s continued leadership should rest with voters when they return to the polls in 2027.
