The Chairman of All Progressives Congress, APC, in Diaspora in Italy, Mr Francis Onabis has applauded the President Bola Tinubu-led federal government for taking the bold steps towards ensuring the autonomy of the Local government administration in the country.
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, had, few days ago, dragged the 36 State Governors to the Supreme Court, praying for the autonomy of the Local government administration in the country.
Mr Onabis pointed out that it was commendable that president Tinubu has come up with the right initiative to install autonomy to the grassroots.
He noted with regret that the process in which state governors fleece the local governments of funds became so appealing and detrimental to the rural dwellers.
Onabis, an Edo State born politician, commented the President for striving hard to put things right.
According to him, “it is commendable that President Tinubu has come up with the right initiative to install autonomy to the grassroots.
“The process in which state governors fleece the local governments of funds has become so appealing and detrimental to the rural dwellers.
“Since the comeback of democracy in Nigeria in 1999, local government councils that are supposed to be the closest to the people became the farthest courtesy of the state governors, through the joint account.
“But recently, the government of President Tinubu, through the attorney general of the federation, has dragged the 36 State governors to the supreme court seeking for an autonomy of the local governments councils to enable them deliver the dividends of democracy and to also perform optimally at the grassroot levels”, he said.
