The Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas (NLNG) yesterday said that it has earmarked N2 billion to upgrade engineering facilities in six Nigerian universities.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Managing Director and Chief Executive officer of NLNG, Mr Babs Omotowa said the NLNG will spend 340 million each on the construction of modern engineering laboratories equipped with cutting edge equipment.
“The six universities selected were based on their top position within their geo political zones as ranked by the Nation Universities Commission, (NUC) and other international bodies, the universities includes University of Ibadan, University of Ilorin, University of Port-Harcourt, University of Maiduguri, Ahamadu Bello University and Univers of Nigeria, Nsukka said,” he said.
While lamenting the decay in the education sector in Nigeria, Mr Omotowa said “no Nigerian university is ranked amongst the 500 best in the world today, neither is our ranking amongst the African countries impressive.”
He called on other stakeholders in the oil industry to also make positive steps in fixing the poor quality of education in the country.
Mr. Omotowa added that the NLNG corporate social responsibility cut across education, healthcare, infrastructural developments, enterprise and capacity development across the country.
Mr Omotowa added that the company also administers scholarship to primary, undergraduate, postgraduate and oversea students.
