The Labour Party (LP) has cancelled its ward congress in the FCT, the party’s National Secretary, Mr Abdulkadir Salam, said yesterday in Abuja.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) the cancellation was due to inadequate information about the exercise.
“As a result of this problem, many people were not aware of the exercise and they therefore did not come out to participate,” Salam said.
He said the cancellation affected the party mainly in the FCT’s Area Councils, which were earlier slated to hold their congresses on Monday, March 24 and Wednesday, March 26.
Meanwhile, the LP National Chairman, Mr Dan Nwanyanwu, has announced that the party’s candidate in the June 21 governorship election in Ekiti would be named on Monday, March 24.
Nwanyanwu told NAN that the party had screened the aspirants on Saturday, March 22.
“The outcome of the screening of aspirants for Ekiti governorship election will be released on March 24,” he said.
Commenting on the party’s Ward Congresses which also came up in eight states of the federation, Nwanyanwu described the exercise as “free and fair”.
He commended the security agencies, INEC and civil society organisations for their dedication to duty in ensuring the success of the exercise.
NAN reports that the congresses were held in Bayelsa, Jigawa, Kebbi, Ogun and Zamfara, as well as Kaduna, Gombe and Nasarawa. (NAN)
