Madugu apologises after Super Falcons WAFCON elimination, WC qualification jeopardy

Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has apologized to Nigerians following the team’s painful 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), a result that ended Nigeria’s hopes of securing automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Speaking after the match, an emotional Madugu accepted full responsibility for the disappointing outcome and appealed to Nigerians to continue supporting the team as they seek another route to World Cup qualification through the playoffs.

“We are sorry we disappointed Nigerians.”
The Super Falcons coach admitted that the result was far from what the team, officials, and supporters expected, especially given Nigeria’s rich history in women’s football.
“I take full responsibility for the disappointment.”
Madugu refused to shift blame, stating that as head coach, he accepts responsibility for the team’s failure to progress beyond the quarter-finals.
“But we still have a second chance, and we will see what happens.”
Despite the setback, he remains hopeful that Nigeria can still qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup through the qualification playoffs.
“The girls did their very best; it was evident.”
Madugu praised the commitment and effort of his players, insisting that they fought hard throughout the game and gave everything on the pitch.
“I think the game was not destined to go our way. We created chances but couldn’t convert most of them.”
The coach pointed to Nigeria’s wastefulness in front of goal as a major factor in the defeat, as the Super Falcons created several opportunities but failed to find the breakthrough.
“Once again, I take responsibility. Please continue to support us.”
Madugu concluded by pleading with Nigerians not to abandon the team, stressing that the players and coaching staff remain determined to bounce back stronger.
Nigeria dominated large spells of the encounter and created numerous scoring opportunities, but a first-half goal from Cameroon proved decisive.
The defeat means the Tenth-time African champions have missed automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and must now navigate the playoff route to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
