A 52-year-old man, Alaba Ayeni, was found dead inside a domestic well near Lamp Bearers Islamic School, off Asa-Dam Road, Ilorin, Kwara State, on Tuesday.
The incident, which occurred close to the deceased’s residence, was reportedly discovered by children in the community, who alerted elders in the area after noticing that the man was inside the well.
The discovery prompted a distress call to the Kwara State Fire Service, which arrived at the scene at about 8:42am and commenced a recovery operation.
The firefighters subsequently recovered the body of Ayeni from the well and handed it over to DPO Bolaji of the Budo-Nuhu Police Station, Nigeria Police Force, for further necessary action.
The Kwara State Fire Service, in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, PFO Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the recovery.
The Chief Fire Officer, CFS Alabi Muhammed, expressed concern over the incident and urged residents to properly cover and secure domestic wells and other open water sources around residential areas.
He also cautioned parents, guardians and community leaders against allowing children to move around unattended near wells, drainage channels and other potentially hazardous locations.
The Chief Fire Officer said the precautionary measures were necessary to prevent similar accidents and protect lives within communities.
The Fire Service commiserated with the family and community of the deceased, while reaffirming its commitment to responding promptly to emergencies and protecting lives and property across the state.
