Man in court over N2.15m fraud

One Jonathan Aigboje, is standing trial before Wuse Zone 2 Chief Magistrates’ court, Abuja, for allegedly defrauding a worker of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resource (FMPR) of N2.15 million.

Aigboje of EL-RIO Homes, Sabo Dale plaza, Jabi, Abuja, is facing a three-count charge of criminal breach of trust, cheating and misappropriation.

The police prosecutor, Cpl. Daniel Adoghan, told the court that one Mrs Chioma Lillian of FMPR, Abuja, reported the case through a petition to the office of the Commissioner of Police, FCT Police Command, Abuja, on January 21.

Adoghan alleged that sometimes in May 2010, the complainant paid the amount to the accused to acquire for her a land situated at Mbora district, Jabi, Abuja.

“After the payment was made, the accused refused to hand over the land to the complainant and during the investigation, he confessed to have committed the offence,” the prosecutor said.

Adoghan said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 312, 322 and 309 of Penal code, respectively.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused is liable to three years in prison, an option of fine or both, if convicted.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Mr. Anthony Ogboi, granted the accused bail for N500, 000 with a surety.

He ordered that the surety must have a means of livelihood and a fixed address and must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

Ogboi adjourned the case to May 2 for further hearing. (NAN)
