Man in remand over assault

A Grade 1 Area Court in Kado, Abuja, has ordered a loader, Sabi Elijah, 22, to be remanded in prison custody till June 20 for allegedly assaulting a man.

Elijah, who loads goods at Wuye by Ruga Village, was arraigned for causing grievous hurt on Mr Okoro Ikechukwu.

The judge, Mr. Abubakar Sadiq, denied the accused bail pending when the complainant finished receiving treatment in the hospital.

Sadiq ordered that the accused must remain in prison custody and adjourned the case until July 20 for further hearing.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Simeon Ibrahim, told the court that Ikechukwu of Masaka by Area 1, Abuja, reported the matter at the Utako Police Division on July 15.

He told the court that on July 14 at about 10.30 p.m. Ikechukwu parked his car at Berger Round About, and was counting his money for the day.

Ibrahim said that the complainant then had an argument with another man, now at large and suddenly Elijah, the accused came from nowhere and accosted him.

He said that the accused pushed Ikechuchuwu down and hit his head with a stick which injured him.

He said that Ikechukwu, in an attempt to get up was hit again by the accused on a previous fracture and was rushed to the National Hospital.

Ibrahim told the court that the victim was currently on admission at the National Hospital, Abuja.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 247 of the Penal code and the offence carries a maximum sentence of four years imprisonment with an option of fine.

However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge. (NAN)
