Mary Habila’s death: Group writes ECOWAS Commission , seeks urgent intervention

A group known as Foundation For The Defence of Democracy and Good Governance Initiative, Ibrahim submitted a petition to the ECOWAS commission requesting your urgent intervention concerning the death of Miss Mary Habila.

In the petition, signed by the National President of the group, Ibrahim Gwarzo and made available to newsmen in Abuja, Habila a physiotherapist, reportedly died under controversial circumstances at the private residence of Senator David Umahi in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The petition stated that the circumstances surrounding her death have generated widespread public concern and significant calls for an impartial investigation.

According to petition , in the interest of justice, public confidence, and the rule of law, the group
requested that all competent authorities ensure that the facts are independently established through a professional, transparent, and evidence-based investigation.

The petitioners demanded that the investigators should conduct a comprehensive criminal investigation into the death of Miss Mary Habila.

The petition requested that they should secure and preserve all relevant forensic, documentary, digital and electronic evidence.

According to the petition , any publicly circulating claims relating to the deceased’s employment, movements, or relationship with any individual be objectively verified through documentary evidence rather than speculation.

He emphasized that the petition is not intended to pronounce anyone guilty , rather it seeks an independent determination of the facts through lawful investigative and judicial processes.

Ecowas Commission , PETITION FOR AN INDEPENDENT, IMPARTIAL AND TRANSPARENT INVESTIGATION INTO THE CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING THE DEATH OF MISS MARY HABILA AND FOR THE PRESERVATION OF EVIDENCE, PROTECTION OF WITNESSES, AND PROSECUTION OF ANY PERSON FOUND CULPABLE

“We respectfully submit this petition requesting your urgent intervention concerning the death of Miss Mary Habila, a Nigerian citizen who died in the house of Senator David Nweze Umahi, Nigeria’s Minister of Works in his house in Uburu Ebonyi State, Nigeria.

“The circumstances surrounding her death have generated widespread public concern and significant calls for an impartial investigation. In the interest of justice, public confidence, and the rule of law, we respectfully request that all competent authorities ensure that the facts are independently established through a professional, transparent, and evidence-based investigation.

Secure and preserve all relevant forensic, documentary, digital and electronic evidence.Obtain statements from every person who may possess material information.Conduct independent forensic and medical examinations where appropriate.

“Protect witnesses from intimidation, harassment or interference. Ensure that no individual receives preferential treatment because of political office, wealth or influence.Make the outcome of the investigation available in accordance with applicable law.Prosecute any individual against whom sufficient admissible evidence establishes criminal responsibility.
