Medical milestone: FCT secures Nigeria’s first non-invasive fibroid treatment machine

In a major breakthrough for public healthcare access in Nigeria, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has taken delivery of the country’s first High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) machine to be deployed in a public hospital.
The cutting-edge medical equipment, housed at the Wuse District Hospital, was officially handed over on Wednesday.
The donation was made by the Nordica Fertility Centre as a flagship event marking the Abuja Reproductive Health Week 2026.
Dr. Abayomi Ajayi, Managing Director of Nordica Fertility Centre, presented the multi-million naira machine to Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, the Mandate Secretary for the FCTA Health Services and Environment Secretariat.
To ensure immediate community impact, Dr. Fasawe announced that the FCTA will provide completely free HIFU treatment for the first 100 eligible patients.
This initiative aims to open immediate doors for women who otherwise could not afford advanced reproductive care.
Accepting the donation, Dr. Fasawe praised Nordica Fertility Centre’s continuous commitment to public health, noting that this gesture follows a 2024 donation of a Colposcopy machine used for cervical cancer screening at the same facility.
She stressed that public healthcare delivery cannot be achieved by the government alone, urging other private organizations and individuals to step up into similar partnerships.
“This highly valuable equipment will be rigorously utilized, maintained, and dedicated strictly to its intended purpose of transforming women’s healthcare in the FCT,” Dr. Fasawe assured.
For years, uterine fibroids—non-cancerous growths of the uterus that affect millions of African women—frequently required invasive surgeries like myomectomies or hysterectomies.
These surgeries come with risks, blood loss, and weeks of painful recovery time.
HIFU technology completely changes that dynamic.
“Non-Invasive -t uses highly focused ultrasound waves to heat and destroy fibroid tissue from outside the body, requiring no incisions or surgical cuts.
“Zero blood loss: Because there are no surgical wounds, the risk of blood loss and subsequent blood transfusions is eliminated.
“Rapid Recovery: Patients can often walk out of the hospital the same day and return to normal life within 24 to 48 hours, a massive upgrade from the 6-week recovery timeline of traditional surgery.”
It was gathered that while this technology has been available in a few select private clinics across Nigeria, its integration into the Wuse District Hospital marks the very first time everyday citizens will have access to non-surgical fibroid treatments within the affordable public healthcare framework.
