The minister of science and technology, Dr. Abdul Bulama has decried the social and financial implication of foreign technologies consume in Nigeria, saying that 90 percent of technologies consumed in Nigeria are foreign.
Bulama who stated that government had resolved to gradually move from resource-based economy to a diversify knowledge-base one, expressed the dismay at the Nigerian Invention and Innovation Techmart/exhibition for Jobs and Wealth Creation organized by National Office for Technological Acquisition and Promotion(NOTAP) in Abuja.
The minister who also stated that the 21st century vision of development was no longer anchored primarily on nation’s natural resources but the knowledge, talents and skills of its citizens, said “Technology is no doubt a major instrument for global trade and competitiveness and as the prime engines of economic prosperity.”
He added that nations across the globe are devising new strategies for boosting innovation and exploiting them.
Expressing further, he said federal government will stop relying on crude oil as its main source of revenue generation.
On his part, the NOTAP director-general, Eng. Umar Bindir stated that NOTAP was the only agency that has promotion as part of its own name.
He added that they were expected to coordinate and energize and unleash the energy of Nigerian technology invention and innovators, which was the reason they keyed the exhibition to project what Nigerians have been able to do.
