Minister foresees economic growth, youth empowerment

Minister of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation Chief Edem Duke has predicted that the nation’s culture sector will move Nigeria from a mono-economy, create wealth and generate youth employment.

The minister said this in Abuja at a pre-event press briefing on the preparations of his ministry towards the 2014 World Culture Day celebrations slated for Wednesday, May 21.

Themed: “cultural entrepreneurship development in Nigeria”, the 2014 World Culture Day celebration has planned activities aimed at encouraging Nigerians to develop their entrepreneurship potentials inherent in the culture sector.

Some of the activities to mark the day include exhibition of arts and crafts by school children and other stakeholders, drama, dance and fashion show presentations, life demonstrations of some cultural products, beads making, traditional hair dressing and motivational talks by Nollywood Artistes and lectures by culture experts.

While explaining the strategic importance of the Culture sector, Chief Edem Duke said, “The Culture sector is in line with President Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda and has served and will continue to serve as a veritable tool that will generate employment for our teeming unemployed youth, create wealth for creative diversity which abounds in Nigeria’’.

The United Nations Education and Scientific Organisation, UNESCO in 2002 declared May 21 annually as a day for the International community to reflect, promote and showcase cultural diversity as a vehicle for guaranteeing peace and prosperity.

Some foreign embassies in Nigeria have been invited to showcase their culture on the day.
