Minister seeks collaborative efforts on roads safety

Date:

Minister of Works, Arc. Mike Onolememen has called for strong collaboration between his ministry and the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute, NBRRI, and relevant government agencies in the ministry’s efforts to delivering better and safer roads to Nigerian road users.

Onolememen made the appeal yesterday when he performed the inauguration of Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute’s Technical Advisory Committee, TAC, and launch of the Road Safety Guidelines for Nigeria, (RSG 2014) in Abuja yesterday.

“I therefore call for stronger collaboration between the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute and the federal ministry of works in our efforts to ensure that we deliver better and safer roads to Nigerian road users”, he said.

In order to achieve this, Onolememen said “the federal ministry of works has also, recently updated the Highway Design Manual which is enlarged to a 12-volume document with detailed information on road signs, markings and other road safety issues including road safety auditing”.

He urged all relevant ministries, departments and agencies of government to patronise the Road Safety Guidelines 2014, by making use of it judiciously so as to partner with NIBRRI with a view to ensuring that there is concerted effort with regard to road safety.

The Road Safety Guidelines (RSG 2014) properly aligns with the federal Road Development Project’s objective to reduce fatalities on Nigerian roads by 50 percent in order to improve safety level along selected safe road corridors.
