The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, has tasked the governing councils to exploit new revenue sources outside government to improve their operations , while ensuring financial discipline.
He gave the charge inhis remarks while inaugurating the governing councils of 25 federal polytechnics and 21 federal colleges of education in Abuja.
Adamu who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Arch Sonny Echono, stated that funding has remained perpetual problems in tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
He charged them to exhibit passion and a deep sense of duty as they chart the directions in which their various institutions will go in the performance of their functions.
‘’ Funding remains a perpetual problem in our tertiary institutions. Governing councils are expected to exploit new revenue sources, outside government to improve your operations, whilst ensuring financial discipline.
‘’You must, therefore, exhibit passion and a deep sense of duty as you chart the directions in which these institutions will go in the performance of their statutory functions. To be clear, the governance alluded to does not in any way entail or necessitate interference by council in the day to day running of the institution.
‘’ In general , the responsibility for the control and superintendence of the policies , finances and property of the nation’s polytechnic and colleges of Education, rest squarely on your shoulders.
‘’’You are also expected to act, in a manner that is best to promote the interest, objects, and purposes of the institutions of which you have, today, become an integral part’’, he stated.
According to him, the councils must share the vision, mission, objectives and purposes of the institutions they are heading.
Speaking, the Executive Secretary of the National University Commission, (NUC) Professor Abubakar Rasheed in his welcome address said that both the technical education and teachers’ education are complementary and indeed top priority pillars in the revised ministerial strategic plan.
