The Federal Government of Nigeria is taking significant steps to enhance its space technology capabilities through international collaborations.
The Director, Media and Corporate Communications of the National Space Research and Development Agency, Dr Felix Ale disclosed this on Tuesday.
Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji reaffirmed this commitment during a meeting with representatives from Axiom Space at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Monday.
“Space technologies have an impact on almost all aspects of development,” Nnaji emphasised, highlighting the transformative potential of space innovations.
He pointed out the benefits for various sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, education, and weather forecasting, asserting that “the space economy has the potential to create wealth and drive national development.”
Expressing gratitude to the Axiom Space team, Nnaji stated, “We are open to collaboration and partnership in the drive towards the effective development of our space programme.”
This openness reflects the current administration’s focus on advancing the space sector as a critical component of national growth.
Special Adviser to the President on Technology and Digital Economy, Idris Saliu praised Nnaji’s commitment, saying, “Your passion and determination towards consolidating the nation’s achievements in the critical sector of Space Science and Technology is commendable.”
He indicated that Axiom Space’s proposals would be seriously considered for future collaboration.
Director General of the National Space Research and Development Agency, Dr. Matthew Adepoju expressed appreciation for the Minister’s efforts, stating, “The success of the Space Agency will no doubt help to better define and drive innovation and development in the country.”
Highlighting Nigeria’s potential as a space power in Africa, Senior Director of International Government Business at Axiom Space, Garvey McIntosh, remarked, “Nigeria is primed to leverage this relationship into a burgeoning space industry.”
He stressed the importance of effective policy implementation and investment attraction to realize this vision.
In addition to discussions with Axiom Space, Chief Nnaji met with the United Nations Special Advisor on Social and Economic Development, Brock Pierce, to explore further opportunities for enhancing Nigeria’s technological landscape.
He affirmed, “My decision to positively impact various parastatals under my ministry is not just a priority but a mission that must be accomplished.”
With these initiatives, Nigeria is poised to emerge as a leader in the space sector, fostering innovation and development for the future.
