The Nigerian Army (NA) has cautioned that the misuse of social media is compromising national security, urging the public to harness its power to champion peace.
The Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Maj.-Gen. Gold Chibuisi, stated this during the 42nd Social Media Seminar, organised by the NA in Ibadan on Thursday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the seminar, involving youths, bloggers, students and other stakeholders, is themed “Promoting a Culture of Security Awareness Through the Responsible Use of Social Media”.
Chibuisi emphasised that Nigerians must understand that the content created, posted, and shared on social media has multiplier effects on the citizenry and national security.
“It, therefore, becomes imperative for all of us to harness the power inherent in social media as a tool to promote harmony, shape positive public opinion, and champion the cause of peace,” he said.
He described the seminar as a platform for open dialogue, exchange of innovative ideas, and collaboration to address critical challenges of spreading fake news, hate speech, and divisive content.
Chibuisi said the seminar was designed to empower participants with the knowledge and tools to use social media positively and responsibly.
The event’s Special Guest of Honour, Maj.-Gen. Lukman Omoniyi, said the harm of spreading injurious or subversive content on social media platforms could not be overemphasised.
Omoniyi, therefore, said the seminar aimed at mitigating the menace associated with the dynamics and complexities of social media on the security landscape, particularly in Oyo State.
According to him, the event forms part of the NA’s efforts to leverage a whole-of-society approach to fulfil its constitutional mandates.
“There is no doubt as to the tenacity and capabilities of Nigerian youths, which we believe, if properly harnessed and channelled, will impact positively on the security landscape of our country,” he said.
He called on Nigerians not to engage or support malicious use of social media platforms, especially on issues of national security.
He urged the participants to work together to ensure that their interactions proffer lasting solutions to the contemporary security challenges emanating from the social media space.
Omoniyi assured the participants and public of the NA’s unwavering commitment toward fostering a responsible and secure online community.
“This seminar promises to equip you with invaluable tips that will guide your social media engagements, empowering you to resist the allure of actions that could threaten our shared peace and security.
“Let us strive to be ambassadors of unity and responsible online citizenship,” he said.
