The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) is rolling out a massive health campaign strategically designed to reach 1,497,665 vulnerable children, alongside thousands of pregnant women and young mothers across the region.
Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary for the Health Services and Environment Secretaria, represented by Dr. Okoli Nicholas, Acting Director of Primary Health Care (PHC) at the FCT Primary Health Care Board disclosed rollout of the first round of the 2026 Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health Week (MNCHW), which is scheduled to run from Wednesday, June 3rd to Sunday, June 7th, 2026, across all six Area Councils.
She explained that under the theme “Optimizing Care for Mothers and Children,” the campaign targets a drastic reduction in maternal, newborn, and child mortality rates.
According to her, to achieve maximum coverage, health authorities have declared all services entirely free of charge at all government health facilities and designated mobile outreach points.
To ensure no one is left behind, the five-day intensive initiative is strictly aligned to meet the needs of the specific target groups.
A primary target of this exercise is children who have never received a vaccine or have fallen behind on their routine immunization schedules.
The mandate Secretary highlighted that clear media reporting is often the “difference between a child reached and a child missed,” calling on journalists to aggressively broadcast these targeted health messages via community radio, neighborhood papers, and social media in various local languages.
She assured that no child will be turned away; those without a health card will be issued one on-site.
Corroborating the execution plan, the FCT State Nutrition Officer, Mrs. Chinyere Ekwueme, confirmed that the exercise will be held across all Primary Health Care centers (PHCs) alongside other strategically selected healthcare facilities.
She extended a strong call to all community stakeholders to actively support the healthcare teams on the ground to ensure seamless delivery.
For children aged 6 to 59 months, the target for aggressive Vitamin A supplementation is to boost immunity and prevent blindness.
Similarly, toddlers aged 12 to 59 months are designated target for deworming tablets to combat parasitic infections and improve nutrient absorption.
Also, expectant mothers will receive targeted physical palpations, blood pressure monitoring, height measurements, iron-folate supplementation, and Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS).
Furthermore, pregnant women are the specific target for Tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccines and malaria prevention interventions where clinically indicated.
For adolescent girls
(nine-year-old girls), which is the exclusive target for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, to offer critical protection against cervical cancer later in life.
Equally, hard-to-reach populations geographic targets, mobile health teams are tasked with penetrating hard-to-reach settlements, rural areas, and nomadic communities.
They will actively screen for malnutrition and administer pediatric care at public hubs, including local schools, playgrounds, churches, mosques, open markets, and informal settlements.
To successfully hit the near-1.5 million child milestone, health workers are deploying a tailored, dual-approach strategy- specialized treatments, maternal interventions, and family planning services will be strictly restricted to established health facilities and PHCs, Vital pediatric care, Vitamin A distribution, and nutritional assessments will be taken directly into the communities via mobile teams.
Alongside direct medical interventions, the campaign will emphasize overall household health education.
Teams will focus on educating families on key hygiene practices, proper handwashing, Exclusive Breastfeeding (EBF), and appropriate complementary feeding methods.
In a final call to action, the FCTA urges all parents, guardians, and expectant mothers to take full advantage of this free healthcare window to safeguard the future of their households.
